For still the vision awaits its appointed time;
it hastens to the end—it will not lie.
If it seems slow, wait for it;
it will surely come; it will not delay.
Every once in a while I get asked to review a book that changes me profoundly. So it is with I Don’t Wait Anymore-Letting Go of Expectations and Grasping God’s Adventure for You by Grace Thornton. Each word, each sentence, each paragraph reached into my soul and moved me closer to a place of wholeness than I had ever dreamed possible. It was Grace’s raw honest definition of her relationship with God that showed me that I wasn’t alone. As I finished each chapter I took one step closer to the Father I thought had abandoned me until, by the end, I was throwing myself daily into His loving embrace.
I want to share with you a paragraph from the beginning of the book so you too can see that you are not alone. “So we feel uneasy about our lives, and we felt uneasy about God. This isn’t what I signed up for. Why did God let my life go this way? Why did my plans not work out even though I felt as though that’s what He was calling me to do or to be? Why hasn’t He shown up yet like I thought He was supposed to? And deep in the quiet of our hearts, whether we realized it or not, a wounded whisper grew to a roaring questions: If this is who He is, if this is how He loves me….what do I do with that?” – Grace Thornton
Grace’s journey is both similar and different to the journey so many of us are on. What we have in common is that we write out the plan for our lives and present it to God for His approval, oftentimes without ever stopping to ask if He really does approve. We dream dreams and create grand visions of every step, every moment. But what happens is that we find ourselves lying in bed next to a sea of used tissues wondering where we went wrong in our carefully arranged journey? That’s where Grace found herself one morning after those plans came to a screeching halt. “Grace, there’s a possibility that your life isn’t going to look anything like you thought it would.”
Oh how many times I have said those words. Of course I said my name first but you get the picture.
Let me just say that you need to read this book if you have ever found yourself off course and searching for happiness anywhere but in the arms of God. Because if you learn nothing else, you need to learn about the One who created you.
“No matter what we do here, no matter how we live — married or single, childless or raising a herd of kids, doing an accounting job or digging wells in Africa– we do it to know God and to get Him.”- Grace
I Don’t Wait Anymore is the intimate emotional journey that Grace took with God to understand just what He had in mind for her. As she says in the end of the book…..”His story is a lot bigger than just me.”
Far too often I try to write my own story, forgetting that God Himself has already filled up the pages of that book. Thank you Grace for reminding me of that. I am forever in your debt. May God bless you as you continue to see what He has in store for you.
