“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
This season of my life has been one of studying the works of A. W. Tozer. I am constantly amazed, as I read his sermons, at how the issues and topics he preached about make it sound like he just preached at the corner church last week. He warned of Christians who straddled the fence between the secular and the sacred, modifying the Church so that it became palatable. He spoke of the false idols of pop culture and the publicity seeking Christian leaders. Does it not sound like he is preaching about life in the world today?
Last month I reviewed Tozer’s book Jesus: The Life and Ministry of God the Son. This month it’s Culture: Living as Citizens of Heaven on Earth. This gathering of sermons from Tozer’s life as a pastor addresses the issues of his day which, amazingly, are even more relevant today. In this book are sermons Tozer wrote about issues such as Social Climbing, Public Prayers, and Modifying the Truth. He speaks of worshiping a famous pastor instead of God. He laments about “a soft breed of Christian that must be fed on a diet of harmless fun to keep them interested.”
Tozer asks are you a Philip or an Andrew? “Whose side are you on?” Tozer asks his congregation. “Are you with those who are convinced that the Lord cannot do anything in this situation? Do you have out your calculator to prove the situation’s impossibility?” How often do we try to busy ourselves with reminding God that something “can’t” be done? Or do we take what little we can find and offer it up to the Lord so that He can work miracles with it?
I challenge you to look up some of Tozer’s sermons. You can find some HERE. Now mind you, these are powerful and straightforward. Not the watered down words of butterflies and happiness you may have been getting. “Have you got the Christian courage to change your home to suit the will of God? Have you got the Christian courage to bring your business into line with the will of God? Have you got the Christian courage to bring your personal life into line with the will of God, to purge everything that is not of God?” asks Tozer.
These two collections of Tozer’s work should find a place on your shelf. If nothing else, they will remind you that the battles you face today are the battles that have been fought for centuries. God is still in charge. I leave you with one final thought from Culture. “We are sent to bless the world, but never are we told to compromise with it. Our glory lies in a spiritual withdrawal from all that builds on dust. The bee finds no honey while crawling around the hive. Honey is in a flower far away where there is quiet and peace and sun and the flowing stream; there the bee must go to find it.”
